PROFESSIONAL and VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCES:

I work primarily with children ranging in age from new-born to 21.  I am excited to see the growth and development of the children I have worked with in schools, hospitals and private practice since 1993!

I have an extensive background in Augmentative and Alternative Communication strategies (AAC) and believe in a Total Communication Approach with fluent and function communication always being the long-term goal.  Along with AAC experience, I have extensive experience American Sign Language (ASL) and Signing Exact English (SEE SIGN) as a communication approach. I am also a certified HANEN Instructor, a family focused language intervention program.

I have volunteered for the NSCD (National Sports Center for the Disabled) and Adaptive Adventures and have been a long-time Special Olympics Coach in Colorado.

MY PHILOSOPHY:

My work with children is based on a child-centered and family focused philosophy.  I believe that the family and/or community (ie: school teacher, nanny, church leader, etc) is an integral part of the success of a child's ability to improve their overall communication skills.

MY TEAM PHILOSOPHY:

Working as a team, everyone has equal input as to the strengths and needs of the child, thus ensuring optimal success with therapeutic interventions!

My work on school based teams is of a
multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary nature. Privately, and in the schools when possible, I like to work with parents, family members, care-givers and teachers to help them to learn the skills that they can use at home to help to elicit successful communication skills.

In the words of the great Vince Lombardi, "Individual commitment to a group effort- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."

So it is through this philosophy when working with children that I find I can capture the best results.  The best teams (including parents, doctors, educators and caregivers) that I have been a part of have a mutual respect, trust and communication towards the individual commitment of achieving the best success of the child. I find it an honor to work on such teams.
